June 13th- Copenhagen

Katelin Coffee Chats
People who know me know I love a coffee, and if you had visited my house since last October I probably forced a coffee from my Breville machine (re-homed to my sister in-law while we are away.) It makes sense then that my first little delight now that we are in Europe is coffee related, although note that the title includes more than just coffee. One of our commitments for this trip was to only indulge in coffee out when we had the time to truly sit and enjoy it (read: avoid “to-go” or takeaway coffees-with a few exceptions).

After our overnight flight, we set out to explore Copenhagen and quickly found ourselves in need of caffeine. We came across Nude Coffee Shop, a stairway down into a small little spot with one table and a few bar spots, which we grabbed. The end result of our lack of rush? A fantastic Cortado and a conversation with the owner. He asked lot of questions about ICE in Minneapolis, he shared a bit about Danish politics, and we talked about coffee culture and “hygge”, which is, in it’s most brief explanation, to enjoy life’s simple pleasures. Like a cortado in a cozy coffee shop.

Nick Arriving in Copenhagen and Exploring the City

After a long red eye flight, arriving at noon in Copenhagen to the charming city, chilly weather, and mass of bicyclists was a rewarding experience. We spent the day leisurely adjusting to the time jump by getting caffeinated (see above) and taking a stroll through the city while doing a self guided walking tour that focused on “hygge” and the Danish way of life. It was a delight to think about how we can use “hygge” throughout the year ahead.
